How Many Psychedelic Facilitators Does It Take to Mess with Your Psyche?

Unfortunately, it only takes one. With the growing interest in psychedelic retreats and ceremonies, it’s crucial to remember the basic safety rules before embarking on such a journey.

These days, shamans, gurus, coaches, and facilitators seem to be everywhere. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of psychedelic retreats promising to heal your burnout, help you find your purpose, or transform your life in some way. But beware—not all facilitators have the relevant background or experience, and this can lead to creating problems rather than solving them.

Red flags when choosing a psychedelic facilitator

So, what should you watch out for when choosing a Psychedelic Facilitator? Here’s a basic list of red flags to be aware of during a psychedelic ceremony or session:

  • The facilitator doesn’t inquire about any medications you’re taking regularly.

  • They don’t ask about your mental health issues or your general mental state.

  • They don’t discuss the goals you’re pursuing with the experience.

  • They avoid answering your questions.

  • They use too much mysterious jargon and are unable to explain things plainly.

  • They ignore your needs.

  • They behave in a dismissive or arrogant manner.

  • They boast about the number of times they’ve taken entheogens and try to assert their superiority.

  • They claim that therapy is just brainwashing.

  • They indulge in conspiracy theories.

  • They’re vague about their knowledge of psychedelics and safety measures.

  • They don’t explain the substance you’ll be taking or how it will affect you.

  • They regularly interrupt you and impose their worldview.

  • They promise to cure any disease and make you rich.

Here’s a basic rule for when you’re unsure about a facilitator: if in doubt, get out! If something feels too good to be true, it probably isn’t. Trust your gut and instincts.
